The Impact of Chat GPT in Islamic Education on High School Students’ Understanding of Religious Moderation

The development of generative artificial intelligence has presented various new opportunities in the world of education, including in the teaching of Islamic Religious Education (IRE). This study aims to analyse the impact of ChatGPT usage on the understanding of religious moderation among Year 11 students at State Senior High School 1 Sukomoro, Magetan Regency. The study employed a quantitative approach with an ex post facto design. The sample comprised 120 students selected via purposive sampling. Data were collected through a questionnaire on ChatGPT usage and a questionnaire on understanding of religious moderation, both of which met validity and reliability criteria. Data analysis was conducted using simple linear regression with the aid of SPSS version 26. The results of the study indicate that ChatGPT usage falls into the high category with an average score of 74.28, whilst students’ understanding of religious moderation falls into the high category with an average score of 78.65. The regression test results show that ChatGPT usage has a positive and significant effect on students’ understanding of religious moderation (β = 0.503; p < 0.05). The coefficient of determination (R²) value of 0.357 indicates that the use of ChatGPT contributes 35.7% to students’ understanding of religious moderation. These findings suggest that the appropriate use of ChatGPT can support the strengthening of students’ understanding of religious moderation in Islamic Education (PAI) learning in the digital age.
